Life can get crazy, and work can get crazy … but both working together to create the perfect storm of stress?! No, thank you. Luckily, there are ways to manage different types of stress in our lives and, ultimately, find a work-life balance designed for each of us.

First, here are some signs that your work-life balance might need an adjustment:

  • You stop taking care of your physical health.
  • Your relationships begin to suffer.
  • Your mental health is going downhill.
  • You don’t care about the things that once brought you joy.
  • You feel incompetent at your job.
  • You have no clear boundaries between work and home.

Sometimes, just noticing that one or many of the signs listed above affect you is the first step in understanding that you may need a reset. Here are some ways to find a better work-life balance:

  • Put physical distance between your work and home lives. Carve out a dedicated office space that’s separate from where you sleep or relax.
  • Disconnect when you’re at home. Put down the phone. It’s ok to unplug when the workday is done.
  • Be more efficient at work. Start by focusing on one task at a time.
  • Prioritize self-care. It isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity.
  • Take a vacation, even if it’s a staycation. Spending quality time with our families helps us feel connected to one another.
  • Set boundaries. Silence notifications after a long, stressful workday. Then, participate in activities you love outside of work to refresh your mind – it’s proven to be beneficial for your mental health and wellbeing.
  • Look for a new job. Perhaps there’s a better fit for you somewhere else. Always keep your eye on new job opportunities as they arise.
  • Get professional help. Talk to a licensed therapist and set regular appointments.
  • Make time for hobbies. Distract your brain from work mode and fill that space with something fun.

Everyone has their own method of balancing work and life. Finding solutions is important so you can start being that better, healthier version of yourself in both environments. In the end, only you know what works for you!
