IBM AIX / Unix Engineer Experience/Major Responsibilities
Analyzes, develops, modifies, installs, tests, maintains large and mid range systems computer software such as operating systems, compilers, and utilities. Modifies, installs and prepares technical documentation for system software applications. Analyzes, diagnoses, resolves, and reports on operating systems problems and ensures effective problem determination and resolution. Participates in the evaluation of new and existing mid range and large system software products. Recommends system software upgrades and operational changes. Oversees and assists with the installation of vendor software maintenance. Ensures system data is retrievable and restorable and tests these functions on a regular basis. Implements adequate change control, operating system standards, and procedures, in order to meet department and organizational service levels. Participates in the evaluation of new and existing large and mid range system software products. Recommends system software upgrades and operational changes. Oversees and assists with the installation of vendor software maintenance. Prepares project plans, which includes definition, scope, resources and schedules: prepares a detailed project timeline and budget estimate and completes projects within established budget and deadlines. May provide consultation on complex technical projects. Functions as a resource to other programming and applications staff to effectively utilize the systems technical software. Implements software and security architecture. Installs and configures application servers. Assists with the development, maintenance and implementation of the strategic plan for large and mid range systems activities in order to address organization needs, technology trends, architectural design and human resource requirements.
Licensure, Registration and/or Certification Required
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field.
Requires 5 years of experience in systems software engineering or programming in an information systems department that includes experiences in developing, analyzing, modifying, installing, testing, and maintaining software and large system components; supporting large-scale projects; and working with large systems software using one or more major operating systems such as Open VMS, MVS, AIX , AS400 , along with experience in maintaining a software suite, i.e., ERP systems, (Lawson) including middleware software (WebSphere) components.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Demonstrated working knowledge of platform’s systems and software, such as: JCL, COBOL, Java, WebSphere, PL1, TCP/IP, CICS, DB2. Demonstrated experience in supporting large information systems projects. Excellent analytical and problem solving skills. Excellent oral and written communications to understand, interpret and communicate technical materials, instruct others, prepare and present reports.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
Exposed to a normal office environment. Must operate all equipment necessary to perform the job. Must be able to sit up to 80% of each workday. Must be able to perform fine hand manipulation when using a keyboard.
